Port of Syros – Hermoupolis

The port of Syros is connected daily with Piraeus by at least two ferry routes one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Itineraries are executed by modern and comfortable passenger-car ferries. The port is also connected with the rest of Cyclades and Dodecanese.

Hermoupolis, the capital of Syros, was founded after the revolution of 1821, when many people from Asia, Chios, Constantinople, Kassiots, Hydra and Psara came to the island because of the national uprising. These refugees were able in a short time to turn a deserted place, in a populous city and an important commercial port, the most important industrial, marine and commercial center of the newly formed Greek.

An important factor for the uprise of Shipping, Trading and Shipbuilding in Syros, was undoubtedly its place, exactly in the middle of the Aegean Sea and especially the wonderful design of the port that has direction SE and is protected from all weather conditions.

The first projects (1834-1840), focused on Nisaki area, in order to strengthen the security of the northern part and improve the port infrastructure. At the same time the building of the new quarantine on the south side is being completed.

Τα πρώτα έργα (1834-1840), επικεντρώθηκαν στο Νησάκι, με στόχο να ενισχυθεί η ασφάλεια του βόρειου μυχού και να βελτιωθεί  η υποδομή του λιμένα. Συγχρόνως ολοκληρώνεται η οικοδόμηση του νέου Λοιμοκαθαρτηρίου στη νότια πλευρά.

The second part of interventions was done in the middle of the 19th century. The main objective was to relocate the operations by shifting the shipyards in a southern position area, the establishment of the Greek Steamers, ancestor of today Neorion, and the building of the new Customs Office.

The next step was to adjust the port to the new needs of that period.

In 1880 the docks are created, the west pier is lengthened and the premises of Greek Ferry extend towards the sea.

In 1960's the quay was constructed in Nisaki area, in front of the warehouses and the Customs Office. Then the size of Neorion was doubled and two floating docks installed.

Today, apart from the offices, the travel agencies and other port services, the port hosts primarily recreational functions with numerous restaurants, cafes and nightclubs, making it the busiest area of Syros, until the early morning hours.
